How to Build a Skincare Routine From Scratch

Three core steps are enough to start; actives are layered in gradually as your skin needs them.

Start with three basics

An effective routine does not need ten steps. Begin with a gentle cleanser, a moisturiser matched to your skin type, and SPF 30 or higher. Those three alone resolve most common skin complaints.

Add actives slowly

After two weeks of a stable base, introduce one active — niacinamide for pores and oil, or vitamin C for pigmentation. Wait four weeks before adding a second so you can trace any reaction to its source.

The right order

The general rule: thinnest texture to thickest. Cleanser to toner to serum to moisturiser, with SPF last in the morning.

Patience is part of the treatment

Skin cell turnover takes roughly 28 days. Do not judge a product before six to eight weeks of consistent use.
